Memphis Ginza

3D interpretation of the iconic 1982 design by Masanori Umeda

A 3D interpretation of the classic Memphis ‘Ginza Robot’ cabinet originally designed by Masanori Umeda in 1982.

Memphis was a design collective established by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass in 1981. Its objective was to create colourful, abstract, postmodern pieces fit for times of prosperity and accelerating industrialism. Despite lasting only a few years, works of the collective left an ongoing impact on the world of design, with many of the pieces, including Bel Air chair, still in production.

The cabinet geometric bold style epitomises the iconic look and feel of 80s interpreted through the eyes of the designer who was fascinated about Japan’s role in the robot-race.

This particular 3D model had been designed and textured in Autodesk Fusion 360, to test colour quality and resolution of full-colour, multi-material Additive Manufacturing systems (Stratasys' Polyjet J750 or Mimaki 3DUJ-553).
