Memphis Bel Air Chair
3D interpretation of the iconic 1982 design by Peter Shire
Memphis was a design collective established by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass in 1981. Its objective was to create colourful, abstract, postmodern pieces fit for times of prosperity and accelerating industrialism. Despite lasting only a few years, works of the collective left an ongoing impact on the world of design, with many of the pieces, including Bel Air chair, still in production.
The chair's geometric bold style epitomises the iconic look and feel of the nineteen eighties. The 'Bel Air' chair, designed in 1982, became a ‘signature design’ of the movement, featuring prominently in books and magazines about the era.
This particular 3D model had been designed and textured in Autodesk Fusion 360, to test colour quality and resolution of full-colour, multi-material Additive Manufacturing systems (Stratasys' Polyjet J750 or Mimaki 3DUJ-553).
